Woodridge Rotary Club Help 'Kids Around the World'

The Woodridge Rotary Club spent hours to help the non-profit provide playground equipment to developing countries where it is not normally found.

On August 28, Woodridge Rotary Club members spent six hours volunteering to help the Woodridge Park District and a Rockford-based non-profit called Kids Around the World. Playground equipment standards are so stringent in the U.S. that playground equipment must be replaced and updated periodically in public parks. The playground at Echo Point Park was slated for replacement. Members of the Rotary Club, the park district and the Kids Around the World organization spent a hot, dirty, but very productive morning donating time to take down the equipment and get it loaded onto a truck to Rockford where the equipment will be fixed. Park District Hosts Movies Under the Moon Event

The free show begins at 8:45 p.m. at Sunnydale Park, 2019 Wheeler St.

The Woodridge Park District will feature The Smurfs during tonight's Movies Under the Moon event. The free show begins at 8:45 p.m. at Sunnydale Park, 2019 Wheeler St. Attendees can join park officials at 7:30 p.m. as they make some Smurf essence juice. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Popcorn, snacks and beverages will be available for purchase. The Smurfs is rated PG. For more information, visit the Woodridge Park District's website.

Woodridge's Own Annie Kennedy to Kick-Off Summer Concert Series

Kennedy is a 2005 DGN grad. She currently lives and performs in Nashville, TN.

Woodridge’s own Annie Kennedy will kick off the Woodridge Park District’s summer concert series this year. Kennedy will perform June 6 at Lake Harriet for a free concert from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Kennedy is a singer and songwriter who graduated from Downers Grove North High School in 2005. She graduated from Millikin University in Decatur in 2009 and immediately moved to Nashville, TN, to start her music career. She fell in love with Nashville after interning with the Country Music Hall of Fame during college. Kennedy now works in an insurance office, writes music and performs as much as possible in Nashville venues to gain exposure. She released her first album, “Highway Songs.” in 2011, writing or co-writing every song. “It’s probably my …

Show off your best skateboarding tricks and win prizes at the June 8 competition.

Show off your best skateboarding tricks at the Woodridge Park District Skate Park Contest. The contest will take place on Friday, June 8, at the Janes Avenue Skate Park, 7927 Janes Avenue. All skate contestants will be guaranteed one qualifying one-minute run for the crowd and judges. Top scorers from the first run will then skate in a second and final deciding run. Prizes are a skate board for first place, a truck for second place and wheels for third place. All participants must wear a helmet. Snacks and beverages will be provided and music will be played to help the crowd cheer on the skaters. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m. Divisions will be separated by ages 8-14, high schoolers and adults. The cost is $10…

Teen Splash Bashes to be Held Monthly at Cypress Cove

Sixth- through eighth-graders will have the park to themselves June 1, July 12 and Aug. 9.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will get to take over Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park with three monthly Teen Splash Bashes.  The teens will get the park to themselves between 7 and 9 p.m. June 1 and between 8 and 10 p.m. on July 12 and Aug. 9.  Tickets can be purchased the day of the event, as well as in advance at Cypress Cove on May 26 to 28 for the June 1 event and three days in advance at Cypress Cove for the July and August events.  Tickets are $5 per person with a junior high I.D. report card or valid Cypress Cove season pass.  Call Cypress Cove at (630) 985-5620 for more information.

Learn How to Be Part of a Rock Band at Woodridge Park District

The park district's "Rock Band Live" camp will culminate in a live performance at a local music club.

Do you play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or other instruments or love to sing? Then register for Woodridge Park District’s Rock Band Live. The programs is taught by Adam St. James, who is a Woodridge resident and an author and editor of numerous guitar and music instructional books. Separate rock groups will form for kids ages 9 to 12, teens and adults. You must have some proficiency on your instrument, but the instructor will help you learn your parts as your new band rocks out on some of the classics found in the popular video games and beyond. The eight-week program runs Friday, June 8 through Friday, August 3 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Woodridge Park District Community Center. The cost is $195 for residents and $292 for non-residents…
