The contemporary folk and tribal art will be on display at the Woodridge Public Library throughout the month of September.
A selection of contemporary folk and tribal art from India will be on display at the Woodridge Public Library for the month of September. Manvee Vaid, curator of the exhibit, has a BFA from the esteemed Sir J J School of Arts from University of Mumbai, India. She is a practicing artist in many media and is a strong proponent of folk art. She has recently launched a website to showcase contemporary folk art at www.DeccanFootprints.com. This exhibit features four distinct styles of art from different parts of India: Madhubani, Gond, Warli, and Bengal Scroll. See a performance by The Wandering Endorphin, alter-ego of musician Jim Green, tonight in Woodridge. The singer, songwriter, and solo acoustic guitarist will perform at 7 p.m. at the Woodridge Public Library. Green creates enchanting finger-style arrangements to percussively-driven music in a fresh and compelling way. He plays rhythms, harmonics, and double-pull-offs with a piano-like approach, making it sound as if more than one guitar is being played. The library is located at 3 Plaza Drive, Woodridge.

In honor of the centennial of Japan's gift of cherry blossoms to the American capital, Jeff Mishur of Art Excursions will present a slide lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Woodridge Public Library. The Coalition supports art in the community, including local art displays and events, for cultural enhancement. The summer reading kick-off event at the Woodridge Public Library will take place June 3.
Registration for the kick-off of the summer reading program at the Woodridge Public Library begins Monday. Jim Cruise, the "Spoon Man" will be the main act at the summer reading kickoff event June 3 at 2 p.m. Note all of the spoon references in Cruise's description: "Bring the entire family and get spooned at this hilarious interactive program for all ages. Jim Cruise, Spoon Man, gives a real stirring performance. Everyone will really eat him up. Spoon Man has a totally clean act and never uses dirty silverware. The Woodridge Police Department will host a topic forum Tuesday on synthetic drugs. Synthetic drugs include synthetic marijuana, synthetic stimulants and synthetic hallucinogens. They pose a public health and safety threat to Woodridge residents because they result in adverse health effects and have been linked to severe psychotic episodes, increased heart rates, panic attacks and hallucinations, police officials said. DGN student Kelly Egan will have her piece displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year.
Downers Grove North artists took first and second place in a Congressional Art Competition showcased at Woodridge Public Library. DGN Student Kelly Egan took first place for her piece, “Painted.” Her artwork will be displayed in a corridor of the U.S. Capitol for one year as part of a national exhibit dedicated to the talent of America’s youth. Egan also received two round-trip tickets to Washington, D.C. to attend a national award ceremony with other young artists from across the country. “Kelly’s digitally-altered photograph was equally imaginative and creative,” said Biggert in a release. “Our judges, who are artists themselves, were delighted at how her work engages the viewer and urges you to look longer and discover more.” DGN's …

Entries in the competition will be on display from April 26-29.
The Woodridge Public Library will host the Congressional Art Competition display for Rep. Judy Biggert this month. The competition, which was started in 1982, recognizes talented artists from each of the representative's districts. Biggert represents the 11th Congressional District, which includes most of Woodridge. Biggert's office will post requirements for entries to the contest. Competition entries will be on display at the Woodridge Public Library from April 26 to 29 during normal library hours. A reception for the artists will be held on April 29, and the winner of the competition will be announced at the reception.

Seventeen Community High School District 99 were chosen the best in their art mediums at the District 99 art show at the Woodridge Public Library. More than 100 students are highlighted in the show, which is available for public viewing until April 21. The library art show began in 2008 after a committe of schools, park district, and government agencies officials met. "The visual art teams at DGS and DGN believe that finding a public venue to showcase student work is an essential element of a strong visual art program," said DGS Fine Arts Department Chair Glenn Williams.
