The 50-foot-wide electromagnet will travel 3,200 miles by boat and barge this summer to be part of a new experiment that will study particle physics.
A particle storage ring spanning 50 feet in diameter will be travelling through Darien and Woodridge this summer during a 3,200-mile journey from New York to Illinois. The giant electromagnet is headed to Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, just outside Batavia, where it will be used in an experiment called Muon g-2, and will study the properties of muons, tiny subatomic particles that exist for only 2.2 millionths of a second. The ring, made of steel and aluminum, is part of a machine built at New York's Brookhaven National Laboratory in the 1990s. Although most of the machine can be disassembled and brought to Fermilab in trucks, the massive electromagnet must be transported in one piece, and cannot tilt or twist more than a few …

The strike caused $25,000 of “heavy damage” to a home on the 1600 block of Fox Hill Place.
A lightning bolt unleashed in Thursday morning’s storm struck a Darien home shortly before 2:50 a.m., causing “heavy damage” to the roof and chimney and charring several walls, according to a Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District press release. The strike also tripped circuit breakers and caused a gas leak in the front yard of the house on the 1600 block of Fox Hill Place in Darien. Though smoke was reported, thermal imaging found no fire in the walls. No one was injured in the strike, or during any other Darien-Woodridge storm-related incidents on Thursday morning. (The Department responded to over a dozen storm-related incidents by mid-morning.) The initial damage estimates are $25,000 for the lightning strike. The Westmont, Tri-…
How crazy is it out there right now? Please show us! Upload your pictures of flooding from DuPage County towns here.
Note: when uploading photos/video, please include a caption with the town and street where they were taken. Thank you! By 7 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Romeoville had the total rainfall amount at 3.24 inches for the previous 24 hours. Then it rained some more. And it's not forecast to stop until Friday morning. What does the scene look like for you? Are there several feet of water outside your home (or, heaven forbid, inside it)? Stranded cars; flooded lawns and streets? If you’re lucky enough not to be too busy dealing with any emergencies right now (and we hope you are), we’d love to see what you see, and our readership likely would as well. If you have any great snapshots/photographs of the flooding around DuPage …

The mother of the former Bolingbrook police officer, convicted of killing his third wife, passed away this week.
Drew Peterson's mother died a month and two days after her son was convicted of murder. Betty Morphey, 84, never attended a single day of her son's five-week murder trial. She also never visited Peterson in the three and a half years he has been locked up in the Will County jail. Morphey suffered from severe dementia, according to a source close to the family. Morphey was married to Peterson's father, Donald Peterson, for 38 years. When her husband died she married Albert Morphey, Donald Peterson's boss at Northern Illinois Gas Company. One of Albert Morphey's sons, Thomas Morphey, has said he helped Peterson carry a blue barrel containing the dead body of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, out of his house. Thomas Morphey also said …

A friend of mine lives by the house that was on fire or struck by lightning. It is off of Carriage Greens by the golf course in Darien. As far as I know nobody was hurt but there was an issue with the gas line in the front of the house. Hope this helps. On a side note I bet those police and firemen were busy during the storm, I've never seen anything like this before.   more ›
