The speech team at South High School placed second and North High placed fourth at the IHSA state meet Friday and Saturday.
It was a winning weekend for the speech teams at both District 99 high schools. Downers Grove South placed second and Downers Grove North placed fourth in the IHSA Individual Events Team State Championship at the speech state meet, held Friday and Saturday in Peoria. In addition, three students—Dan Leahy (South High), Natasha Prosek (South High) and Alex Buckley (North High)—were all crowned state champions in their individual events. Bill Chengary and Michelle McCarthy took fourth place in duo interpretation at the National Forensic League National Tournament this month.
Downers Grove South High School was one of only 13 schools in the nation to receive the "School of Excellence" Award at the 2012 National Forensic League National Tournament this month. Competing against hundreds of other students, Billy Chengary and Michelle McCarthy took fourth place in duo interpretation at the tournament. Both Chengary and McCarthy graduated from DGS this month. The 2012 National Forensic League (NFL) National Tournament was held June 10-15, 2012 in Indianapolis. “This has been an extraordinary finish to an incredible speech season,” said Head Coach and NFL Sponsor Jan Heiteen. “I could not be prouder of this team and the legacy they leave as performers and leaders.” Heiteen retires this school year after leading the…

The Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High School Speech teams are headed to state. Downers Grove South took first place in its sectional Saturday with 66 points. Downers Grove North took second with 48. Hinsdale Central High School came in third with 47 points. Students are ranked in three preliminary rounds; those scores determine the final rounds. Students in performance in the round perform just once. Each ranking corresponds to a certain number of points. The team with the most points wins the tournament. Downers Grove South students qualified for state in 12 of the 14 individual events and performance in the round, in which students perform a 15-minute play. Individual events range from poetry reading and duet acting to …

Downers Grove South's Speech Team took first place in its regional Saturday. Downers Grove North, which hosted the regional tournament, took third. Downers Grove South took first place in nine of 14 individual events, all of which require one or two students. DGN took first and DGS took second in performance in the round, in which a group of students performance a 15-minute play. The team competed against speechers across the country in Dallas from June 13 to 18.
South High School's speech had its best-ever finish at the National Forensic League National Tournament in Dallas this month, with one national champion and five other students placing in the top 10 of their events. "More than 3,200 students participated in the 2011 NFL National Tournament, one of the world's largest academic contests," according to a district press release. "The event drew visitors from across the country and as far away as China. Top performers take home more than $200,000 in college scholarships." Claire Drews was named national champion in expository speaking from hundreds of speechers, receiving scholarship money from both the NFL and the event sponsor, Western Kentucky University.
