The passing of Sue Burtnette has left a vacancy on the Board; residents who are interested in the two-year post are asked to send in applications.
The following is a press release from the Village of Woodridge: Last month, the Woodridge community lost Trustee-elect Sue Burtnette to an unfortunate and untimely death. Due to her passing, a vacancy exists on the Village of Woodridge Board of Trustees. Mayor Gina Cunningham has announced the process that will be used to fill the vacancy. Trustee Susan Burtnette passed away on Sunday just two weeks after winning election to the Board of the Village for which she had such a great passion.
Woodridge trustee-elect Susan Burtnette died on Sunday morning from lung cancer, two weeks after being narrowly elected to the Village Board, the Suburban Life reports. "Woodridge was a very big part of her heart and soul," Burtnette's son Brad told the paper, explaining that involvement in Woodridge government was one of her life goals. "She was extremely dedicated to the community and her church." According to the paper, Burtnette, who worked for Edward Jones, suffered a stroke two days before the April 9 election, but was aware that she had accomplished her dream of winning a seat. The Village of Woodridge is calling attention to some foreclosures in town that were later remodeled and sold for a higher value, a sign officials say demosstrated the value of investing in the community. "The past several years have been very difficult for homeowners," according to a village news release. "Like communities across the country, Woodridge has had its share of home foreclosures. However, a positive new trend has emerged in which foreclosed properties are being purchased, renovated and resold at values closer to pre-recession levels." After months of failed negotiations, the Village of Woodridge is moving forward to acquire the shopping center, a spot for the Athletic Recreation Center development.
The Woodridge Village Board approved and ordinance last week to take eminent domain action to acquire the Janes Plaza Shopping Center. According to a village news release, the village and the property owners couldn't come an agreement after "lengthy negotiations." During the summer of 2012 Woodridge amended its Janes Avenue Tax Increment Financing District plan. The change went into effect after several months of Village Board consideration and public input. The change allowed for TIF dollars to be used to purchase property and contribute toward the development of an Athletic Recreation Center to be built and financed by the Woodridge Park District. Story updated at 4:10 p.m. Friday: Former Woodridge mayor Joel Kagann died Thursday, Feb. 7, village officials announced Friday. Kagann was born Sept. 16, 1936. Visitation is set for Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Blake Lamb Funeral Home at 5015 Lincoln Ave. in Lisle. Visitation will also take place Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Scholastica Parish at 7800 Janes Ave. in Woodridge, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. Scholastica. The village of Woodridge will award up to five $1,000 scholarships to current high school seniors.
Every bit helps when it comes to covering the cost of college, and the Village of Woodridge is looking to award up to five $1,000 scholarships to current high school seniors. According to the village's website, the village is teamed up with ProLogis Foundation to award the scholarships to seniors attending college in the fall. The scholarship brochure lists the following as primary criteria for the scholarships: Scholarship applications are judged by a panel of educators selected by Woodridge Mayor William Murphy. Candidates in Woodridge’s municipal election April 9 will have the opportunity to go back to school Jan. 24, when staff members from the village’s finance and public works departments present information on finances and budget. The forum, which will take place at 6 p.m. in the Werch Board Room at Woodridge Village Hall at 5 Plaza Drive, is the second in a series of four sessions designed to help educate candidates on board policies and practices. Park district officials say Village Greens of Woodridge is self-sustaining and doesn’t require “a dime of taxpayer money.”
Woodridge Park District officials gave a detailed presentation to the village board Thursday night on the district’s five-year strategic plan, which assesses the future viability of Village Greens of Woodridge golf course. The 115 acre, 18-hole golf course at 1575 W. 75th St. was purchased through referendum in 1972 to provide outdoor recreation, open space and flood control facilities for the Village of Woodridge. The golf course is managed by the Woodridge Park District through an intergovernmental agreement that has been in place since 1997.
