Literacy DuPage recruits and trains tutors who teach English to adults.

Since 1972, we’ve equipped our big-hearted army of tutors to work one-to-one with DuPage County adults who cannot understand, speak, read, or write English. We provide volunteers with the materials, techniques, and confidence that they need to help adults shatter language barriers. After tutors complete a 5-part training series, they are matched with their adult learners. The pair select a convenient, weekly meeting time and public place, often the local library.

Instruction is highly personalized and free. The learner chooses specific life skill goals - understand street signs, apply for a job, tell a bedtime story, or decipher prescription labels - and the tutor offers practical instruction to help the learner achieve those goals. This tailored approach produces results, builds relationships, and strengthens families and communities.

Every year, Literacy DuPage serves more than 300 adult learners across 30 communities in DuPage County. Right now, our waiting list includes 88 people, who hope to be matched with tutors soon. Generally, learners come to us with English language skills below ninth-grade level. Some are native English speakers, but most are immigrants, representing 35 first languages and 32 countries.

Thanks to our volunteers, more than 10,000 adults have gained the English abilities to survive and thrive in their communities. More than 128,000 DuPage County adults possess sub-par English language skills. That's 1 in 9 residents! We have a lot of work to do. Won't you join us as a tutor?
